I had so many wonderful experiences at SDCC. I plan on sharing some of them in a future journal. First I'd like to share the story of my latest cosplay. It started a long time ago, and it's been a great journey. This is a story of love, of people and works.
Films have a special place in our hearts as we grow up. I don't know a kid that doesn't request "Again!" as soon as a movie is over. Parents all across the world tiring of watching the same shows over and over, but for the kid it's their first true loves. For me these are the classic 80s films: Star wars, the Dark crystal, and Labyrinth. When a little girl, seeing these magical sence you can't help to imagine being in the movies, and when a giant ball gown is on screen, and every one is floating around, you can't help to dance with them. As an adult I love to look back and feel the awe that I did as a child and I do that through cosplay.
My latest work means memories of family, and new memories of friends I've made in the last couple of years. I'm honored and so appreciate of everyone that had supported me and been excited for the process, who help me learn knew techniques and walked down magic tunnels to find the perfect fabric.
In 2007 I had my latest graduation. After Graduating I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do or where to be. My boyfriend at the time broke up with me the day before graduation when I called him to say that I had finally handed in my thesis. It was the end of a chapter for certain and would open a very knew chapter of my life. Shortly after I accepted my absence of faith in the Mormon church, and then had my first convention experience. It was a small convention(JTAF5), but would lead to many many more. The people I had met there were planing on a convention in Seattle a few months latter, Sakura con.
In the inter mean the first friend I happened to make in Pennsylvania was a con goer. I went to a middle sized con, Katsu con, and was completely overwhelmed by the size at that time. My impression after JTAF 5 was that all cons were small gathering of uber geeks in warehouses. I was in for a big surprise. I tput together a make shift Misa, Deathnote cosplay. I had no hotel to stay in and changed in the bathroom of the convention center after a friend had driven to the con with me who lived in the area. That was the moment when I realized the difference between cosplay and dressing in costume. A girl in the bathroom asked who I was dressed up as. I told her Misa from Death Note. She ask where my cross necklace was and made a few more comments about knowing my character better. As I wandered the halls(at the hieght of Death note's popularity) I saw the seriousness that simple cosplay was done with, and felt totally embarrassed with my outfit. I had a great con, but my perspective was changed a bit.
Sakura con finally rolled around. This was my third convention and the third time I wore Belldandy, each time it was more and more exhilarating as the cons got larger and larger. Only one friend from Cali ended up going, ~aehale. We had an awesome time. I stayed up late dancing the night away. By 3 am the room had nearly emptied out and that's when ~raven-unit approached me for some dancing. It was a fun fun night, :~blackfruitbat asked if I would have her babies. It was the start of some of my bestest friendships.
Now I was hooked on conventions. My new boyfriend at the time wanted to indulge my Sasu-Naru love so we both picked a character. I ended up going with Naruto. He wasn't able to go to Fanime, but I had planned on it after Sakura con. It was my debuting convention for Naruto. I think I brought all 7 cosplays I owned at the time and switched in and out of them every few hours, but I kept going back to Naruto. Lols a love which would inspire about 15 other cosplays. This is when I had one of my favorite con memories. ~Supernovadobe in her Naru-maid-lolita snuck up on me, which is a testament to how much my brain tuned out orange from seeing the color in my room so much, lifted me up and spun me around. I was totally freaked out. But at the same time was having so much fun with the experience. It would be a few conventions later before we became really good friends, but the seed was planted.
That seed eventually lead to my Halloweentown Axel cosplay(Sakura con 2009). It was the first time being in such a large group cosplay, and in a lot of ways overwelhming. I was surprised at the positive reaction to the cosplay and the love people have for Axel. That day was the start of a new friendship with a cute little witch Kairi(~alcblueyes), who wanted to do a crack pairings with Axel. Screen magic just can't be created with anyone, but I think we had it from our first meeting. An audience of con goers requested crack pairings and we got our first pics together. Unfortunatly I've never found any of the pictures online.
I skipped the next sakura con, but still had gone to fanime, y-con ect ect. For Sakura con 2011 we all decided on FF13 characters. I only want to cosplay one of two characters: Hope or Sarah. I was far to tall for Hope, so I got Sarah. After clearing up a small mix up I got to keep my baby, Snow, ~alcblueyes. We had cosplay coupling magic. For months of planning we sent emails and notes and hubby and wife to each other, by the time we met up in character, it was easy to play an in love couple. That convention I also did a double cosplay with ~antiquity-dreams, the White Queen and Alice. Though being good friends, we couldn't get the on camera magic our cosplays deserved.
After the convention we all had a big slumber party at ~raven-unit's and~blackfriutbat's apartment. I was talking to someone, and was thinking of all the big ball gown like dresses I had done, that I had done two of my dream cosplays. The question was was there and other? Yes there was. But I needed a special partner for this one. Because it's from one of my most loved sense in all of cinema. I nervously went over to sit next to alcblueyes. I didn't know if she would want to do an other pairing with me, even tho Sarah/Snow went so incredibly well. I tapped my fingers together then asked. "Would you be my Goblin King?" her eyes lit up and she jumped off the coach. "YES!" OMG it was happening.
With over a year of waiting and preparing, many bleeding fingers from hand sewing on gems, many moments of tears, I'm happy to present the accumulation of all my cosplay skills up to this point, with the perfect partner in crime, over the next few weeks, and hopefully years, my new favorite cosplay the Labyrinth's Jereth(~alcblueyes) and Sarah(myself).
